Understanding Harley-Davidson origins and who owns it is something that many people can't find an answer to. So, who owns Harley Davidson?

If you own a Harley-Davidson or are thinking about getting one, it is understandable that you would want to know who owns the company, and if you are like me, it can get under your skin when you can't find a solid answer to a simple question.

Harley-Davidson was started by four men in 1903; Walter Davidson, Arthur Davidson, William Davidson, and William Harley. Today, Harley-Davidson is a publicly-traded company, meaning it is not owned by one single corporation. Instead, it has many shareholders, yet it still trades as Harley-Davidson Inc.

While that may seem like a straightforward answer, I am sure that it has raised a few more questions, especially regarding the shareholders of Harley-Davidson. Well, my goal it's to give you as much information as possible so that once you have bookmarked this page, you won't ever have to search for the question again.

Look, I consider myself more than a motorcycle enthusiast, and when it comes to Harley-Davidson as a motorcycle and the company, I consider myself passionate and well-researched. So, for everything you need to know, keep reading.

Who Are The Biggest Shareholders In Harley Davidson?

As mentioned, Harley-Davidson is part of a publicly-traded company. As of writing this article, their shares are valued at approximately $31 each. The company has a market cap of $4,62 billion.

While many companies and individuals hold shares in Harley-Davidson, five companies control most of the shares. According to an article by CNN Money, here are the top five stakeholders in Harley-Davidson:

  • The Vanguard Group, Inc: Owns 8.89%
  • H Partners Management LLC: Owns 8.55%
  • BlackRock Fund Advisors: Owns 7.83%
  • Boston Partners Global Investors: Owns 6.78%
  • Beutel, Goodman & Co. Ltd.: Owns 4.89%

When we add those numbers together, it may seem strange to know the top five Harley-Davidson stakeholders only own 36.94% of the company. So yes, Harley-Davidson has a lot of owners.

Harley Davidson Parent Companies

Sometimes it can be challenging to keep up with which company owns which and who has a parent company. Well, it is relatively simple when it comes to Harley. See, Harley-Davidson Inc has two parent companies. These two companies are:

  • Harley Davidson Motor Co Group LLC
  • Harley-Davidson Motor Company Group, Inc

Harley Davidson Motor Co Group LLC is the primary parent organization. They have several subsidiaries, from medical equipment suppliers to drivetrain manufacturers. Harley-Davidson Motor Company Group, Inc is also a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson Inc.

It is unclear how involved these parent companies are. After all, a parent company can be directly involved, influence the direction of a subsidiary, and help with decision-making, or they can take a hands-off approach and let the subsidiary run itself.

Who Owns The Most Harley-Davidson Dealerships?

There are over 700 Harley-Davidson dealerships in the United States of America alone. Harley-Davidson shareholders or even parent companies do not always control these dealerships.

Anyone can become a Harley-Davidson dealership owner as long as you are approved and meet the standards. With that said, I went through the trouble of finding out who owns the most Harley-Davidson dealerships in the United States:

The Veracka family owns 13 Harley-Davidson dealerships as of writing this article. It was in 2003 when the family started their involvement with Harley-Davidson. Their latest acquisition saw them buying one of the largest dealerships in the country and the largest in Arizona.

Does Harley-Davidson Have Any Subsidiaries?

I know, things are about to get more complicated because Harley-Davidson Inc, which has two parent companies, also has its own subsidiaries. Luckily, these subsidiaries are easier to understand because they consist of Harley-Davidson outside of the United States more than anything else.

Harley Davidson Inc has these subsidiaries:

  • Harley-Davidson EMEA
  • Harley-Davidson Brazil
  • Harley-Davidson India
  • Harley-Davidson Asia

You can think of these subsidiaries as more of headquarters than anything else. They oversee the corporate side of the brand overseas.

So, suppose you live in India, Brazil, Africa, or Asia and want to open up a Harley-Davidson dealership. In that case, all you have to do is speak to the affiliated company.

While you would still need to handle business within your dealership, they will take care of everything else, such as brand reputation, marketing, and everything else that goes with owning a big corporation.

Does BMW Own Harley Davidson?

BMW is in direct competition with Harley-Davidson. Look, BMW is known for its high-quality cars, but the motorcycle department is booming at the moment. Not only do they make superbikes and touring bikes, but they now also make cruisers. Does BMW own Harley-Davidson, though?

No, BMW does not own Harley-Davidson, and they did not strike a partnership with the company either. Instead, that was an April fools joke made on April the 1st, 2015.

However, BMW has taken Harley-Davidson to task with their new R18 BMW cruiser. Of course, Harley-Davidson still seems to be the most popular in the United States, with its overseas operations growing every day.

Does Kawasaki Own Harley Davidson?

On April the 1st, 2014, I woke up to the news that Kawasaki was acquiring Harley-Davidson. If this were to happen, Harley-Davidson would be a Japanese company in theory. Many of us, even the most passionate Harley-Davidson fans, were caught out by this news.

However, Kawasaki does not own Harley-Davidson, and they were not trying to acquire the company. Instead, a rumor was started that was more of an April fools joke than anything else, but it was so obscure at the time that it almost became believable.

Is Harley Davidson American Owned?

I have written a recent article discussing in-depth what percentage of Harley-Davidson motorcycles are American-made. I highly recommend you read that article once you have gone through this one.

Harley-Davidson is an American-owned company. Its two parent organizations are American-owned, and most of the principal stockholders in Harley-Davidson are Americans.

Because Harley-Davidson in most regions of the world is a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson Inc, those too are American-owned. However, when discussing dealerships, it is near impossible to say that an American owns every dealership.

Who Bought Harley-Davidson In The 80s?

Up until 1981, Harley-Davidson was owned by a company called AMF (American Machine and Foundry). Before AMF, Harley-Davidson was on its way to going out of business, and it might not have existed today if it weren't for the financial stability of AMF.

With that said, in 1981, Vaughn Beals and twelve other investors bought the company from AMF and pushed it to what it is today.

Where Is The Harley Davidson Headquarters?

With so many dealerships across the United States and the world, knowing how to get hold of the headquarters for the company can be tricky; I mean, where do you even start? Well, luckily, you can get hold of the HQ.

Harley-Davidson was founded in 1903 in Milwaukee, WI, which is still where the company has its headquarters. If you need to go there in person, you can find the offices at 3700 W Juneau Ave, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53208, United States.

Alternatively, you can give them a call Baptist number: (414) 342-4680
